Utility and necessity of fluorescent and reflective safety clothing

Every employer is required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act to determine the hazards in a workplace with an RI&E (risk inventory and evaluation). Limited visibility of people near traffic is a common problem. High visibility clothing, such as work jackets and other safety clothing significantly increase the visibility of your employees. All high visibility clothing that Crings has in its range complies with the European standard NEN-EN-ISO 20471. A safe idea.

These clothes are therefore an indispensable part of the equipment for professional groups such as ambulance workers and road workers, as well as for other people who perform work in the vicinity of traffic, such as people in landscaping, transportation or (wheelchair) cab transport.

3 different risk classes

The NEN standard has three different classes of risk. The speed of traffic determines the degree of danger an employee faces:

  • Class 1: speeds up to 30 km/h
  • Class 2: speeds up to 50 km/h
  • Class 3: speeds from 50 km/h and above

According to the standard, the wearer of the clothing must be highly visible in daylight, at dusk and in the dark. Each circumstance requires different precautions.

Fluorine and reflection required

To ensure good visibility during the day, fluorescent colors are needed; for the night, on the contrary, good reflective material. Therefore, only clothing in which both are applied can meet the standard. In addition, people must also be able to see it on all sides.

Requirements for design safety clothing

Therefore, there are also certain requirements for the design of visibility clothing. The accepted fluorescent colors are red, yellow and orange. And for the reflective material, it must be tested and have its own certificate.

Minimum areas per class

Different minimum areas of both components apply to each risk class:

These standards apply to so-called "passive road users": people who are on the road but are not traffic participants. These are people who are usually busy with completely different things than the traffic around them. As a result, they pay less attention and really need this extra protection.

Crings helps and advises

For all the aforementioned occupational groups, Crings has different types of garments in its range. By cleverly combining the different types of clothing, you determine your own level of visibility. Of course, we are happy to help you make the right choice. Please contact us for advice: info@crings.eu or 053-230 128.
